The Department of Labor was founded at the University of Economics in Bratislava in 1964 by splitting up the Department of National-Economic Planning. Over the years, various organizational modifications have changed the name of the department, and in 1992 the Department of Social Development and Work, operating in this form up to the present was created. New societal and socio-economic conditions have called for the development of a new concept of study, and there has been a gradual conversion of teaching content and the creation of a number of new subjects. The results of the Department's creation was profiling study programs and the training of professionals in labor and social development and their employability at all levels of governance.
Today, the Department of Social Development and Labor is the leading science and teaching workplace in Slovakia in its field. It guarantees the study program Human resources and Social management on the 1st level of higher education and the study program Social development and social policy for the 2nd level of higher education. The Department also provides teaching on the 3rd level in higher education of the UE at the Faculty of National Economy in Bratislava.
The scientific research activity of the department is focused on two priority areas:
- Labor market, workforce, employment and labor market policies
- Social protection, social inclusion and social quality.
In pedagogical and scientific research, the Department also employs external co-workers from central government bodies, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, foreign universities as well as research institutes, experts from the private and the third sector. The Department of Social Development and Labor cooperates with several foreign universities, with its educators speaking at universities in the world (Bonn, Princeton, Rutgers, NYU, CEU, Corvinus University of Budapest, Universidad de Huelva, West University of Timisoara, University of Tampere, Rovira and Virgili University of Tarragona...) and acting in international and national vocational forums (European Parliament, European Commission, Senate of the Czech Republic, Slovak Government...)
The Department of Social Development and Labor systematically develops links with the industry and works closely with the MPSVaR SR, ÚPSVaR, Trexima Bratislava spol. s.r.o., the Institute for Labor and Family Research, the EPICD and other stakeholders.

25 years of transforming centrally planned economies: experiences and perspectives
1st and 2nd December 2016
Hotel Sorea, Bratislave
Countries of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone over the past quarter century profound political and economic changes. Labour market issues, labour and employment remain the focus of academics and policy makers of the labour market. Although aggregate economic indicators point out to increasing prosperity in the region, the wider quality of life issues are often neglected and participation some groups of people on this generally positive development is insufficient. Themes of social policy, social protection, social inclusion and social quality are therefore becoming a priority for further economic and social development. Harmonization of economic development and education is essential for further progress.
We look forward to your papers and see you in Bratislava!
