Short bio:

Flavio Malnati received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute (CERGE-EI) in Prague in 2026.

He is an applied economist with a focus on long-term economic development, economic history, and geographical economics. Specifically, he examines how long-run factors — state capacity and institutions, technological change, and social norms — shaped development in pre-industrial economies, using discrete historical shocks as quasi-natural experiments to identify their effects.

One of his notable works is titled "Pre-Modern States and Economic Development: Evidence from Teutonic Order Prussia," where he investigates how a state's military capacity can foster early economic development before the emergence of modern states.

He teaches at EUBA at the undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. levels, including Economic Policy, Economic Development, and Applied Microeconomics: From Correlation to Causation.
