Since its inception, the Department of Economics has placed emphasis not only on pedagogical activities, but also on the development of scientific research activities. Research projects are primarily focused on basic and applied research. Many of them are connected with university education, cooperation with social and economic practice at home and abroad.

The Department currently focuses its scientific research activities in the following areas of research:

Overcoming Digital Divide in Europe and Southeast Asia ODDEA, Project 101086381, Call: HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01-1

Project duration: 2022 - 2026

Project coordinator: University of Economics in Bratislava

Project members - Department of Economics, UEBA: prof. Ing. Anetta Čaplánová, PhD., Ing. Ľubomír Darmo, PhD., Ing. Eva Sirakovová, PhD.

Main goal of the project: The main goal of the project is to contribute in the region of Southeast Asia to the formation of groups of researchers who will consistently, interdisciplinary and systematically focus on digitization processes and identify similarities and differences in the digitization process between both regions (Europe vs. Asia).

Additional information about the project: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought digitalization to the forefront, as both individuals and governments have used digital technologies and skills to tackle the scientific and socio-economic challenges posed by the pandemic. Digitalization has helped to sustain the economy and society by enabling remote work, tracking the spread of the virus, and accelerating research for potential treatments and vaccines. This has emphasized the need for a resilient digital transformation and for strengthening the digital economy and society. In fact, the European Commission has made the digitalization of Europe one of its key priorities, aiming to make it a “digital decade”. The importance of digitalization extends beyond Europe, however, as EU associated countries such as Montenegro, and developing countries in Southeast Asia like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, also stand to benefit from digital transformation. It can help these countries to speed up their economic growth, achieve sustainable development, and improve the quality of life for their citizens.

This new program will be supported by the development of relevant study program modules, course documentation, and study texts, as well as the retraining of partner country academics teaching in the program. Additionally, study services for students of the Master’s program will be upgraded, in line with best practices, and administrative staff responsible for their provision will be trained.

Indebtedness of economic entities and countries in the European Union

VEGA project number: 1/0679/23

Project duration: 2023 - 2026

Project leader: Ing. Marcel Novák, PhD.

Project members - Department of Economics, UEBA: Ing. Ľubomír Darmo, PhD. (Deputy project leader),Ing. Ivana Lennerová, PhD., prof. Ing. Ján Lisý, PhD., prof. Ing. Eva Muchová, PhD., Ing. Peter Leško, PhD., Ing. Karol Trnovský, PhD., Ing. Zuzana Brinčíková, PhD., doc. Ing. Marta Martincová, PhD.

Main goal of the project: Based on the assessment of the impact of the sustainability of public debt and the convergence of tax revenues on the macroeconomic stability of countries and economic entities, we will prepare a proposal for systemic solutions in the area of indebtedness of countries, households and companies.

Additional information about the project: The result of the indebtedness of countries in the current period is increasing debt and increasing indebtedness of economic subjects, especially as a result of the pandemic and rising prices. There are problems associated with debt repayment and an increased risk of non-payment of obligations - an increase in the risk premium. At the macro level, the government loses maneuvering room for fiscal stimulation of the economy - especially in a situation of low interest rates and high inflation. Indebtedness of Slovak households is growing at the highest rate among EU countries and requires additional measures in the area of macroprudential policy. The project will focus on the analysis of the sustainability of the public debt, the search for solutions to eliminate the growth of household indebtedness and measures for the stability of budget revenues with regard to the upcoming reforms based on the approved Recovery and Resilience Plan in the Slovak Republic and EU countries. It will propose systemic solutions in the area of indebtedness of countries, households and companies. It will present new schemes in the area of tax administration and collection with respect to Ricardian equivalence.

Improving the Functioning of Economic Processes through the Application of Behavioral Economics Knowledge (Theoretical and Empirical Approach)

VEGA project number: 1/0545/23

Project leader: prof. Ing. Anetta Čaplánová, PhD.

Project members - Department of Economics, UEBA: Ing. Eva Sirakovová, PhD., Ing. Ľubomír Darmo, PhD., Ing. Eleonóra Matoušková, PhD., Ing. Mgr. Zsolt Horbulák, PhD., Ing. Andrej Přívara, PhD., Ing. Mgr. Hussein Mkiyes.

Main goal of the project: The main goal of the project is to contribute to the development of behavioral economics and advancement of knowledge through the implementation of theoretical and empirical behavioral research. Based on its findings, recommendations will be drawn for better implementation of measures and public policies.

Additional information about the project:

The project will advance scientific knowledge in the field of behavioral economics, an interdisciplinary scientific discipline studying individual behavior and the factors deviating it from rationality. The behavioral approach is increasingly relevant as economic development has revealed limitations in the rationality paradigm. The project builds on the systematization of scientific literature, focusing on original research aimed at the theoretical and empirical testing of selected concepts. The research team examines decision-making processes of individuals and their implications for the micro and macro spheres. In theoretical research, the researchers model the behavior of economic agents, taking into account prospect theory. In the empirical part, using controlled experiments, they verify selected theoretical conclusions of behavioral research and formulate practical recommendations. The project contributes to advancing knowledge in the field of behavioral economics and a better understanding of decision-making by subjects in the areas under investigation.
