In 2026, the Danube Cup Pitch Competition celebrates its 10th anniversary. What began as a regional initiative has evolved into a well-established international platform connecting universities across the Danube region and beyond. Today, the network brings together 11 partner universities from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia, offering students a unique opportunity to present validated startup ideas on an international stage.
The Bratislava University of Economics and Business joined this prestigious network last year and participated in the competition for the first time. In 2025, two student teams advanced from the national round to the international online semifinals. Team TRACKWISE subsequently qualified for the international final in Budapest, where it represented our university among the strongest student startup teams in the region. Their participation confirmed that our students can compete successfully in an international entrepreneurial environment and demonstrated the growing potential of startup initiatives at our university.
What is the Danube Cup?
The Danube Cup is a validated idea competition that balances startup potential with educational value. The focus is not only on innovative ideas but on the quality of validation, business potential, and the team’s ability to execute. The competition evaluates projects according to clearly defined criteria: idea quality and problem–solution fit, validation efforts, business potential, team capacity, and pitch performance.
In 2026, each participating university may nominate up to two startup teams. The international semifinals will take place online on 6 May 2026, featuring 20 pitches across two parallel sessions, each consisting of a 4-minute pitch followed by a 6-minute Q&A. The international finals will be held on 18 May 2026 at WU Vienna, hosted by the WU Entrepreneurship Center.
The finals in Vienna and ViennaUP 2026
This year’s final round will be organised by WU Vienna and embedded in the ViennaUP startup festival. ViennaUP is one of Europe’s leading decentralised startup festivals, bringing together founders, investors, corporates, researchers, and innovation stakeholders for a week of events across the city. It offers access to networking sessions, expert discussions, pitch events, and thematic conferences covering technology, sustainability, creative industries, and social innovation.
By integrating the Danube Cup final into ViennaUP, participating teams gain exposure not only to the competition jury but also to a broader international startup ecosystem. For students, this means direct contact with practitioners, potential partners, and investors in a professional environment that goes beyond a traditional academic competition.
Why should students apply?
Participation in the Danube Cup provides structured preparation for entrepreneurial practice. Teams refine their value proposition, validation process, financial planning, and go-to-market strategy. They receive feedback from experienced jury members and engage in pitch training before the final. The competition requires a structured pitch deck with mandatory components, including customer persona, roadmap, and financials, ensuring a high level of professional preparation.
Beyond competition results, students gain experience in presenting under time constraints, responding to critical questions, and positioning their ideas within an international context. These skills are directly transferable to grant applications, accelerator programmes, and investor discussions.
